What is Jyotiṣa?

Jyotiṣa is the knowledge of astrology based on the Vedas, the holy scriptures of India, also commonly known as Vedic Astrology. Veda means all knowledge, knowledge of all forms and types, of everything in this world and beyond. But the key purpose of the Vedas is to impart to us the knowledge of the reality of the soul. We are not just this body and mind, that which we can experience with senses, but rather in reality we are all part of One Soul – an undifferentiated Consciousness.

And the ultimate objective is to realise that we are This and nothing else. But due to avidya or ignorance, we believe in this separate existence, and hence there is a reaction to our every action – binding us to our karma. So every soul is actually striving to overcome these bonds of karma and become free, which is mukti or mokṣa from this karmic cycle.

Jyotiṣa is a Vedāṇga i.e. part of the Vedas. There are six Vedāṇgas, and they all help in different manner to understand and realise the Vedas themselves.

Why Jyotiṣa?

Jyotiṣa literally means the science of light. This is not light as a physical entity but rather light as part of the Universal Consciousness of which we each are but a ray. In practical terms, Jyotiṣa helps us to understand our karmic past, present and future – it reveals our karmic lifemap. And based on this understanding, how can we karmically better navigate in our future to gain mokṣa. This is different from how astrology, which is non-Jyotiṣa, is practised in the West or even by many practitioners in India.

One can use vedic astrology and even Jyotiṣa for solving mundane problems at the material level, like career, relationships, health, wealth etc (and there is nothing wrong with this approach), but that is not its real purpose. It's very similar to how Yoga is being used these days, just as a toolkit of physical exercises, when its true purpose is to delve much deeper.

What’s the difference between Western and Vedic Astrology?

Vedic (Jyotish) and Western astrology differ primarily in their zodiac system (Sidereal vs. Tropical), leading to different sign placements, and their focus, with Vedic emphasizing karma, destiny (dharma), and remedies, while Western focuses more on personality, psychology, and self-improvement, though both use planetary placements. Vedic uses fixed stars (Sidereal Zodiac) and emphasizes the Moon, Rahu/Ketu, and Nakshatras, often using square charts, while Western uses seasonal alignment (Tropical Zodiac) with the Sun, favoring circular charts for personality analysis.

  • Vedic (Jyotish): Uses the Sidereal Zodiac, based on the actual, observable constellations and their fixed positions, aligning with astronomy.
  • Western: Uses the Tropical Zodiac, tied to Earth's seasons and the Sun's position at the spring equinox (0° Aries), not the constellations.
Is Jyotisa only for Hindus?

Jyotisa is for everybody, not just for Hindus – just like the Sun and the Moon give light and energy to everybody, just as water quenches the thirst of everyone. Jyotisa is a universal science and is unbound by any religious or ritualistic beliefs.

For e.g. in what Shiva or Mahadev for a Hindu can mean Jesus Christ or Christ consciousness to a Christian. The key thing is to understand what is the nature of the energy being referred to is.

What kind of remedial measures are suggested during a consultation?

It entirely depends on the nature of the problem being addressed. Sometimes, just some particular actions or changing some activities themselves can address a problem. Many times, a mantra can be suggested and sometimes gemstones as well. But I am very careful while recommending gemstones. In some cases, a mantra along with a Yantra is also recommended.

Over a period of a decade I have acquired proficiency in recommending a rudraksha, sometimes a single bead or a mala and have found amazing success. This I will almost certainly recommend :)

Mantras

What is a Mantra, and what are the main benefits of chanting one?

A Mantra is a sacred word, sound, or phrase, most often in Sanskrit, derived from the roots man (mind) and tra (tool or instrument). Therefore, a mantra is literally a "tool for the mind" used to focus attention and induce deep states of meditation.

The main benefits of chanting include:

1. Stress & Anxiety Reduction: The rhythmic repetition helps calm the nervous system and lowers the stress hormone cortisol.

2. Improved Focus: Mantras serve as an anchor, replacing mental chatter with a clear point of concentration.

3. Emotional Balance: Specific sound vibrations are believed to purify the mind, promoting compassion and inner peace.

What is a Japa Mala, and how is it used during Mantra chanting?

A Japa Mala (or mala beads) is a string of 108 beads, plus one larger Guru bead or Meru, used to keep count during repetitive mantra chanting, or japa.

To use a Japa Mala:

1. Start at the bead next to the Guru bead.

2. Hold the beads between your thumb and middle finger (avoid using the index finger, which symbolises ego).

3. Recite your mantra once for each bead, pulling the bead towards you as you finish the repetition.

4. Do not cross over the Guru bead; instead, turn the mala around and continue chanting in the reverse direction.

How long does it take for a Mantra to start working?

The physical and mental benefits, such as reduced stress and improved focus, can often be felt immediately after chanting. However, for a mantra's deeper, spiritual benefits (known as siddhi), consistency is key. Results are usually noticeable after establishing a steady, dedicated practice (sadhana) over several weeks or months.

Do I need an initiation (Guru) to chant a Mantra?

While traditionally, specific high-level mantras (like those used for deity worship) were given via initiation (diksha) from a Guru, common and universal mantras like Om, the Rig veda Gayatri Mantra, or the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra can be chanted by anyone. The most important requirement is faith (shraddha) and consistency in practice.

Prasiddha mantras can be done by anyone.

Can I chant Mantras silently, or must I speak them aloud?
  1. Vaikhari Japa (Vocal): Speaking aloud, best for beginners and focusing the physical mind.
  2. Upamshu Japa (Whispering): Moving the lips but only whispering, which conserves energy.
  3. Manasika Japa (Mental/Silent): Chanting entirely in the mind, considered the most advanced and powerful for deep absorption.
What are the different types of Mantras?
  • Bija Mantras (Seed Sounds): Short, one-syllable sounds like Om or Klim, which represent fundamental cosmic energies.
    • Moola Mantras (Root Mantras): Longer phrases that include the name of a deity or a spiritual principle.
    • Vedic/Upanishadic Mantras: Ancient verses like the Gayatri Mantra or portions of the Vedas.
What is the meaning and power of the Om Mantra?

Om (or Aum) is considered the Pranava, the original, universal sound from which all other sounds and creation emerge. It represents the three states of consciousness (waking, dreaming, deep sleep) and the silent state of absolute reality. Chanting Om vibrates the body, centers the mind, and aligns the individual consciousness with the universal frequency.

How can I get started on the journey of Mantras in the proper traditional way?

After a lot of research and first-hand experience, I would HIGHLY recommend Purnesh ji to go and begin your journey into Mantras. Visit https://purnesh.co/mantras/ to learn more.

Rudraksha

What is a Rudraksha bead, and what does it symbolize?

A Rudraksha is the seed of the Elaeocarpus Ganitrus tree, revered as the Tears of Lord Shiva (Rudra-aksha). It symbolises compassion, protection, and the link between the earthly and divine, offering balance to the wearer.

Read more about Rudraksh from here .

What are the key spiritual and health benefits of wearing Rudraksha?

The key benefits include reducing stress and anxiety, stabilizing blood pressure due to its electromagnetic properties, improving focus during meditation, and shielding the wearer from negative energies and thoughts.

What is the significance of the "Mukhi" (Face) in a Rudraksha?

The Mukhi refers to the natural vertical lines or grooves found on the surface of the bead. The number of Mukhis (from 1 to 21) defines its ruling deity, associated planet, and specific benefits (e.g., 5 Mukhi is for general health and peace, 7 Mukhi for wealth).

How should I wear a Rudraksha mala for maximum benefit?

Rudraksha should be worn on the neck or wrist, ensuring the beads touch the skin for optimal energy flow. It is essential to cleanse and energize the bead by chanting the appropriate Mantra (like Om Namah Shivaya) before wearing it for the first time.

Are there any essential "Do's and Don'ts" when wearing Rudraksha?

Do wear it with faith and keep it clean. Don't share your personal bead with others, as it is believed to align with your personal energy. While modern views vary, some traditions suggest removing it during funerals or consumption of non-vegetarian food/alcohol.

How can I tell if a Rudraksha bead is original or fake?

The most reliable test is observing the well-defined, natural grooves (mukhis). While traditional tests exist (like the float test or copper coin test) they are not proven or reliable. The most definitive way is a magnifying glass check or an X-ray/CT scan to verify the number of seeds inside matches the number of mukhis.

Hence, at Jayakamala.com, we source rudraksha from a trusted network that supplies rudraksha directly from the source, and certify our beads.

Which Rudraksha (Mukhi) is best for a beginner to wear?

The Five Mukhi Rudraksha is the most common and universally recommended bead. It is ruled by Kalagni Rudra (a form of Shiva) and the planet Jupiter, bringing general well-being, peace, and purification, making it suitable for all ages and genders.

Is the 1 Mukhi Rudraksha truly the most powerful and rare?

Yes, the One Mukhi bead is considered the rarest and most powerful, representing Lord Shiva Himself and the consciousness of Supreme Truth. It is worn for self-realisation and liberation, though true round 1 Mukhi beads are extremely difficult to find.

We at Jayakamala.com have provided authentic, Nepali-round one mukhi in a variety that is still available to our clients after a careful study of their charts and have seen brilliant results!

Yantras

What is a Yantra, and how is it related to Mantras?

A Yantra is a sacred geometric diagram or "tool" for the mind, representing a deity, planet, or cosmic energy field. It is considered the visual body of a god, while the Mantra is its corresponding sound body. Meditating on a Yantra harmonizes the visual and sonic energies.

How does Yantra geometry influence the environment and the wearer?

Yantras work by acting as a cosmic antenna that attracts and channels specific vibrational frequencies. The geometric patterns focus these energies, helping to remove obstacles, increase positive energy flow, and enhance the wearer’s connection to the deity's power.

What is the central dot (Bindu) in a Yantra, and what does it represent?

The Bindu (dot) is the central, unmanifest point of the Yantra. It symbolizes the source of all creation and ultimate consciousness (Shiva). The practitioner begins meditation by focusing on the Bindu, moving from the gross outer layers toward the subtle inner core.

What is the correct way to place and face a Yantra in the home?

For optimal effect, Yantras should be placed on a clean altar in the East (facing West) or North (facing South) direction, as these are aligned with the flow of positive solar and magnetic energies. It must be placed at eye level or higher.

How do I properly consecrate (Prana Pratishtha) a new Yantra?

Consecration is the process of infusing life into the Yantra. It involves washing the Yantra with milk or holy water, applying sandalwood paste (tilak), and chanting the Yantra’s specific Mantra 108 times on an auspicious day to activate its spiritual energy.

Is it required to chant a Mantra daily to maintain a Yantra's power?

Yes, daily practice is required. Consistent worship, even simple acts like lighting a lamp or incense and chanting the corresponding Mantra a few times, maintains the Yantra’s vibration and ensures it remains an active channel for its associated cosmic energy.

What is the Shree Yantra, and why is it called the "King of Yantras?"

The Shree Yantra (or Sri Chakra) is the most revered of all Yantras, representing the entire cosmos and the divine feminine energy (Goddess Tripura Sundari). It is sought after for attracting wealth, prosperity, and spiritual liberation, leading to its title, the Yantra Raja.

Which Yantra is best for attracting wealth and financial success?

The most powerful Yantras for financial goals are the Mahalaxmi Yantra (for continuous wealth and good fortune) and the Kubera Yantra (for managing finances and increasing stored assets). They are often worshipped together for holistic financial well-being.
